Quiet time set the standard
When I was 18, I was encouraged in my first year in college by The Navigators to have a daily devotional time. I did. Quiet Time became a foundation for my time spent with Jesus.
Over the years since then, that one foundational discipline has been a key component of being a disciple of Jesus Christ. Since Jesus took time to be alone with His Father, I followed his lead. I took time to read and pray, but I did not write.
Over the years that stability of taking in the Word of God has given me peace and protection.
“Only one life, ‘twill soon be past. Only what’s done for Christ will last.”
I wrote that in my Bible. Priorities of perception influenced my decisions.
Routine time became an obligation — a mere task to check off
But then some years became merely task oriented until…
I started writing down my thoughts.
I saw more clearly.
I read with greater purpose.
SOAPing time changed my life in 2008
As I volunteered at church, I was introduced to Wayne Cordeiro’s book, Divine Mentor, and he described how to learn from other characters of the Bible. He described a method that caught my attention.
- S - Scripture
- O - Observation
- A - Application
- P - Prayer
I began to practice.
I received a SOAP journal with a place for a Table of Contents, a daily Bible reading plan, and blank pages for entries.
Now I make my own.
I’m on Journal #49.
Daily integration.
Constant conversation.
Greater awareness of “Christ in me, the hope of glory.”
God’s time I cherish daily for the last 14 years
To say that my joy in meeting with Jesus each day has improved is quite an understatement! I look forward to what He has to say to me through His Word.
What fascinates me is the way that SOAPing intertwines the Scriptures, the circumstances, and the filling of His Holy Spirit to talk with my human spirit to lead me, enlighten me, energize me, and grow me.
We have a relationship now that I really, really enjoy!
