The degree, or amount of time that a Christian spends surrendered to the leading of the Holy Spirit, depends on avoiding the grieving (intentionally sinning) and quenching (stop listening) to the Holy Spirit.

You can surrender to the leading and work of the Holy Spirit or not. It’s your choice. God did not make you a puppet.
